Practices for Challenging Times

During this time of intense suffering in the world with the pandemic spread of COVID-19, the vast wisdom and skillful means of the Vajrayana offers us methods to pacify the causes and conditions of negative circumstances and energy, transform these negative experiences into positive ones, and use them to spur liberation. Lama Tharchin Rinpoche's teachings on Transforming Obstacles into Boundless Peace give insight into how delusion and suffering occurs and how we can pacify and transform those circumstances with meditation, practices, and prayer (see links below). Then with teachings on The Final Words of Gyurme Dorje, Rinpoche guides us in how to train in pure perception, the view of the buddhas. You can read more about these teachings below.

Transforming Obstacles, Training in Pure Perception

Transforming Obstacles into Boundless Peace

In Transforming Obstacles into Boundless Peace, given on the third anniversary of the September 11th attacks in the U.S., Rinpoche gives guidance on how to pacify the causes and conditions of negative circumstances and the energy that tends to recur according to specific time intervals (si in Tibetan). Rinpoche teaches how to transform these negative experiences into positive experiences and use them to spur liberation according to the practice of the Great Perfection. Rinpoche gives us specific prayers and practices to aid in dispelling obstacles, such as Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche’s Dzam Ling Chi Dang Prayer for World Peace, Chatral Rinpoche’s Prayer to Avert Nuclear War (The Seer’s Truthful Speech), Riwo Sang Chod (Mountain Smoke Offerings), and Seng Dong T’hal Deb (Lion-Faced Dakini with Hand Clapping). Teachings were given on September 11, 2004, Orgyen Dorje Den, Alameda, California. Oral translation by Ngawang Zangpo.

The Final Words of Gyurme Dorje (Nang Drak Rik Sum)

Just before passing into parinirvana, Minling Trichen Terdak Lingpa Gyurme Dorje, the 17th-century founder of the distinguished Nyingma Mindrolling Monastery in Tibet, gave his final, pith advice in this extremely concise prayer. Rinpoche teaches how, as practitioners on the path, we can train in pure phenomena to recognize our innate Buddhahood. Using this profound prayer as a life-long practice, we can awaken to the pure nature of ourselves and all phenomena. Lama Tharchin Rinpoche introduces this essential practice of Vajrayana: how to recognize all phenomena – form, sound, and awareness inseparable with emptiness – as deity, mantra, and our original Buddha mind.
