In an intimate, relaxed small-group setting on the Northern California Big Sur coast, Rinpoche uses "A Drop of Nectar," a poem he wrote in 2002, as well as question-and-answer periods, to provide guidance on recognizing and stabilizing our innate luminous awareness. Discussing methods to distinguish between the five afflictive emotions that cause suffering and the five primordial wisdoms that are our original enlightened nature, Rinpoche gives clear instructions for meditation and for integrating one’s practice with our daily activities.

This series of teachings highlights Rinpoche’s unique ability to explain the nature of mind according to Dzogchen Great Perfection in a simple yet profound, straightforward, accessible manner. Many of the students receiving Rinpoche’s guidance at Esalen Institute for this teaching were meeting him for the first time and had an interest in spirituality and psychology, but no previous exposure to Buddhism or Dzogchen. Others in the group were Rinpoche’s longtime heart students. “A Drop of Nectar at Esalen” teachings present the Dzogchen path in a manner easily understandable for beginners while providing pith, profound direction essential for experienced practitioners. Rinpoche’s kindness, patience, and sense of humor, along with his sharing of early life stories and personal experiences, make this set of teachings an especially delightful practical guide to the path to enlightenment.
